Stop Talking Yourself Out of Possibility

“Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity.
We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake.”

–Francis Bacon, Sr.

Are you talking yourself out of the life you (really) want… and that the world needs you to have?

The other day I listened as a leader shared passionately and with clarity how they knew it was time to make a change in their job. They are miserable, feel undervalued, sick, tired, loosing income, relationships, and more.  When I invited them to take the one, initial action needed to create the possibility of transforming their situation, without missing a beat they said “no, I can’t.”

Hmm.

In Shonda Rhimes’ new book ‘Year of Yes’ she offers 5 top lessons that transformed her life:
1.    Say “yes” to Using Your Voice
2.    Say ‘Yes’ to Your Weight
3.    Say ‘Yes’ to Saying ‘No’
4.    Say ‘Yes’ to Real Friendships
5.    Say ‘Yes’ to Love

My list is:
1.   Say “yes” to Joy
2.   Say “yes” to Already Being Good Enough
3.   Say “yes” to Knowing the Impact You Have on Others
4.   Say “yes” to Finding /Speaking Your Unique Voice
5.   Say “yes” to Knowing You Belong Wherever You Are
6.   Say “yes” to Trying
7.   Say “yes” to Curating Possibility

Do you hear whispers of what you wish you could be doing, things that make you smile at the thought… and then your “practical” or “realistic” voice takes over and tells you, you don’t have time, money, knowledge, talent, etc. to do the very thing that brings your joy? Do you find yourself creating reasons why the options in front of you aren’t good enough, won’t work, or aren’t even real? Is your list of all the things “preventing” you from having the impact you are meant to have when you are feeling joy… longer than all the things that ARE possible?

Sometimes the self-sabotage can be hidden in the smallest of choices; hardly visible during our daily routines.  Do you plan to get up early to walk on the beach, but end up talking yourself out of it to get a jump on the work you need to get done instead? Or because it seems a little too cold out?

Even right now, with all the tangible challenges a global pandemic is creating for everyone, we can be our own worst enemy, getting in our own way if we don’t have the awareness and strategies to identify limiting beliefs, test assumptions, reveal imposter syndrome, a fear of failing, resistance, triggers – the list goes on!

If YOU are wishing for things to be better, or find yourself believing all the reasons why being happy, successful, employed, etc. are NOT possible for you right now, I invite you to pause, look inward and check-out some of my past blogs with exercises and prompts to help test your assumptions.

The fact is, that we need you to be feeling joy, so that you can be having the impact you are meant to have on others – with ease and financial sustainability.

The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost,
to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.
