Have an Idea? (please) Take Charge

I spoke with an incredible nonprofit leader this week who excitedly shared their vision to positively impact the community and convene leaders together to discuss transformational possibilities in their industry,

They shared their insights about the problems the sector is facing, the new, creative strategies and solutions they see to address them, and much more.

Their eyes were sparkling, they were animated as they shared their vision. I call that “enrolling and engaging” and it was infectious!

I smiled and asked:  Who will facilitate this incredible event?

They then listed some of the long-time leaders in the area they might ask

What?!  It clearly should be YOU!

I then watched as the twinkling eyes dimmed.

Do you have an exciting idea, project, initiative or vision, that you know will have positive impact?

Do you:

  1. Rely on others to see it and champion it?
  2. Rely on others to approve it?
  3. Rely on others to make it happen?
  4. Ask permission to proceed?
  5. Seek encouragement to proceed?

And then, the important question: do you get frustrated that others don’t:

  1. Value your ideas?
  2. Listen to you?
  3. Credit you with being the one who had the great idea?

If you answered YES to these last three questions, then I invite you to go back to the first 5 questions and ask yourself WHY you rely on others.

What are the assumptions that you are making about yourself, your idea, or others? Make a list.

For example, common responses are:

  • I’m not enough of an expert, I don’t have x, y or z.
  • I can’t just do it.
  • I’m not sure if it’s a good idea, or if anyone will want to do it.
  • I’m not sure I know how to do it.

For each one, ask yourself:  What evidence do I have that my assumptions are correct. What would I do if they are all FALSE?

Here’s what I know for SURE.

If you smile at the thought of how your idea can help others (and those are two very important caveats)… then we NEED your idea to occur.    It is YOUR responsibility to test your assumptions, reveal and unpack your hesitancy (is it for good reason, or are you resisting, lacking confidence, etc).
