Leadership: A Quote From the Queen Inspired Me

I know of no single formula for success, but over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal, and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration, to work together.”Queen Elizabeth II

As we learned of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, I found myself thinking about her legacy and impact. When I saw the quote above, it inspired me to reflect on her words about leadership.

I am surprised at how often people say to me: “Kathryn, I know you coach leaders at Crossroad Moments who want to shift into a Next Chapter… but I’m not a leader.  I’m just a (fill in the blank.).

As we advance through our careers and lives, there comes a time – if we’re fully aware – when we get to realize that leadership is not about a job title, or the size of the organization or project we lead.

Leadership with a true aim to benefit, enroll and engage others, creates the possibility for engagement and passion, collaboration and innovation, connection and support, all of which have benefits to the individual, a business, a team, a group, a community, and the world.

Purposeful and sustainable leadership comes from first knowing the impact we have on others when we feel joy and identifying the unique and even quirky ways we consistently – and often effortlessly – are able to bring about that impact.

Once we become experts on how we help others, we create the possibility for being able to do that over and over.

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself.
When you become a leader, success is all about growing others”.
—Jack Welch

Honing our leadership abilities in this way, connects us to our purpose and the impact we are meant to have.

Understanding and valuing our impact and how we create it free’s us from limiting beliefs, the need to prove ourselves, and the often time-waisting irrelevancy of comparing ourselves to others.

Think about that.

Serving others, without losing oneself.

Having impact without burnout or suffering.

Creating meaningful momentum that others help to fuel and champion as their own.

Every person I meet has a purpose and impact.  Every person I meet is a leader.   You don’t have to be a CEO… or a Queen.

My invitation: As you notice and reflect on the impact of the leaders you admire and hold in great regard, tell me what your impact is (when you are showing up fully, feeling joy), tell me how you create that impact. Share this purpose with the world so that the very people who need you can find you, and so that we can all support you!

Together, we move the needle. Together, we help others be their best selves.  Together, we create ripples of impact, and legacies of a depth and breadth that we may – or may not – ever fully know.
